As the skin ages, you lose collagen and elastin. This causes the middle layer of the skin (dermis) to thin. As a result, the skin may loosen and wrinkles may appear.
While you can’t stop the aging process, these steps can help keep your skin healthy:
Use sunscreen every day (even if you’re indoors most of the time). Choose a sunscreen with a broad spectrum sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.
Do not tan indoors or outdoors. Tanning damages the skin. It ages the skin and can cause skin cancer.
Find healthy ways to manage stress. Stress can make some skin conditions worse.
Get regular skin exams to check for changes that may be signs of skin cancer.
Quitting smoking and using tobacco products. Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes and e-cigarettes make the skin age faster.
Use mild cleansers to wash your face in the morning and at night.
Shower regularly and use moisturizing lotion to prevent dry skin.
